Meet the Artist
About Art by Yo
The "Keep Your Head Up" is a collection of pictures I have produced in memory of my mother, who passed away in 2019. Those were some of the last words she told me because she knew how much I was going to miss her. Those words became the foundation of everything I create.
I'm Yo, the artist behind Art by Yo. Some of you may know me by Yolanda Rice.
These picture are created from my heart and humorous side and my experience with different hairstyles while attending cosmetology school.
I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2023. Painting has always been one of my first loves since childhood. I do it as often as I can. It has been a struggle with the pain, treatments and trying to keep a positive attitude. Painting helps me to keep going. I'm going to keep painting until I can't.
I paint bold, expressive portraits of women that celebrate humor, happiness and are colorful, like me. Each picture also shares the words of encouragement that my mother told me "Keep Your Head Up". Painting takes my mind off having cancer and shows me that I have to keep fighting with strength and resilience no matter how painful.
My son and only child Nick has been my greatest inspiration to never give up on my Artwork, reminding me everyday why this matters and the message was not just for me, but for everyone.
We are all going to go through something unimaginable in life, and when you look at one of my pictures hanging on your wall you will be inspired.
My work features vibrant colors, graphic lines, and uplifting energy. Many of my originals are enhanced with hand-applied embellishments and sparkle, making every painting truly one-of-a-kind - just like you.
Through my art, I hope to bring awareness to Multiple Myeloma and remind you of your own power. No matter what challenges you face," Keep Your Head Up".
